Trucking’s part to combat human trafficking
Industry unites to raise awareness of human trafficking and educate the public on warning signs
During National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, TMAF once again launched an online awareness and education campaign to educate the industry and the public on this growing crisis.
Throughout the month of January, TMAF is sharing facts through our social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, to educate people on the warning signs of human trafficking, empower the public to recognize and report suspicious behaviors, and highlight the trucking industry’s unique position to help stop human trafficking.
With over 3.5 million truck drivers on America’s road, the industry is uniquely positioned to help identify and report trafficking cases, which is why the entire trucking industry has come together to help put an end to this modern form of slavery.
To help raise awareness of the issue, American Trucking Associations and Truckers Against Trafficking hosted a Facebook Live event in Washington, D.C. on January 15. They were joined by the District of Columbia’s Attorney General Karl A. Racine. During the event, which you can watch through Facebook here, the members of the organizations explained the urgent need to put a stop to human trafficking and shared the efforts that the trucking industry has taken to educate their drivers and the public.
Laura Cyrus, Director of Corporate Engagement, Truckers Against Trafficking, also authored a blog post on the HireRight.com titled, “How Are Trucking Organizations Combating Human Trafficking?” In the op-ed, Laura explains how the organization’s work to combat human trafficking is growing. She explains how Truckers Against Trafficking’s efforts to educate industry members has spread beyond the trucking industry and into the busing and oil and gas industries as well.
To date, truckers have helped identify over 1,100 victims from 2,250 calls placed to the hotline.
