Paul Young: a Technician Keeping up with Change
Paul Young is the Tennessee Facility Supervisor at Baylor Trucking, where the Baylor shop not only services Baylor tractor-trailers, but has grown over the last six years to service other company and driver equipment. In fact, the Portland, Tennessee facility is well known for exceptional service, and Paul leads the team of technicians and their reputation in the Tennessee facility.
The youngest of four children, with a twin sister nine minutes older, he grew up on the family farm. Paul loved tinkering and working on their equipment from a young age. In high school he set his sights on being an auto mechanic, but quickly decided he wanted to work on bigger equipment. He graduated from Nashville Auto Diesel College and began his career at Baylor Trucking.
Paul graduated from college in May and in November he began taking care of the Baylor Tennessee facility. He quickly moved up to a full-fledged technician working on equipment, and in 2014 was promoted to Supervisor. “I have four technicians working with me now,” and in a very excited tone Paul said, “and we have a former Marine starting with us next week, so along with me, we will have six full-time technicians, which we need with such a busy shop.”
“We do everything here, from routine maintenance like lights and inspections, to getting the trucks and trailers fixed and rolling. Repairs go in spurts; you will have a lot of battery issues or then brakes that need to be fixed, we handle just about anything. We make sure every piece of equipment that leaves our facility is safe and legal so the driver can deliver their freight on-time.”
When asked what he has seen in his 20 years working at Baylor Trucking, Paul said, “The change in trucks. There is a lot more technology, safety equipment, automatics and ABS on trailers. We went from dual tires to super singles and now back to dual tires. As a technician, we must keep up with all the changes to service the equipment properly,” he added.
Paul loves working at Baylor Trucking and when asked specifically why he said, “Cari [Baylor] is a huge part of it. She makes you feel like family and treats all of us like family. You want to stay at a company where you are appreciated and are part of the team.”
Paul is married and has a number of nieces and nephews. Family is important to Paul and having lost his dad during the pandemic, he doesn’t miss his standing Wednesday lunch date with his mom.
