“I love driving my truck!”
David Lepak, Driver for Quality Carriers, 2022–2023 NTTC Driver of the Year Finalist
David Lepak is a tank truck driver for Quality Carriers with over 29 years of tank truck experience and 1.2 million accident-free miles.
David said it is incredibly humbling to be named as one of eight finalists for the 2023 NTTC Champion award. “It is such an awesome experience to be able to represent my company and this industry, “he said. “Its so humbling to be surrounded by people who take safety so seriously.”
David was inspired to join the trucking industry by his father, who was a truck driver for Texaco for over 35 years. He spends his days hauling petroleum products in Wisconsin. He says that weather can be very unpredictable in the Badger State, so safety on the roads is paramount. “When there’s inclement weather or icy roads, it’s better to be safe and wait for salt trucks and road crews. Call your consignee; they understand. It’s not worth the risk to get in an accident.”
On the road, David emphasizes safety and defensive driving. “It’s so important to be alert at all times, to watch out for your surroundings, and keep your following distance. You can’t always predict what other drivers will do, so it is very important to keep a safe distance and be prepared for anything.”
David says driving his truck is one of his favorite things about his job. “I love driving my truck! It’s a 10-speed ’95 Freightliner, which is a bit older than a lot of other trucks, but it handles well and is a pleasure to drive.”
David’s advice to the next generation of truckers is to understand and expect that trucking is both a job and a lifestyle. “Safety is the main point to get you back home- day-in and day-out.”
David believes that it would be helpful to the industry to provide classes and training to high school graduates rather than waiting until they’re older. “When I started, I had to find another job until I was 21 and was able to start driving on the interstate.”
Outside of trucking, David likes to go hunting with his kids, and drag racing in his ’71 Chevelle.
